Local law enforcement responded around 1 a.m. to reports of a shooting near Rushcreek Drive. However, when officers arrived at the scene they didn’t find any victims, local news station KPRC reported. About 15 minutes later, officers then learned that two children had been taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Witnesses said that a car with a woman and two children inside stopped at a stoplight when another car drove by....

Some teachers and education professionals have expressed worry that violent scenes from Fortnite are being reenacted at schools. Prior to this particular incident with the knife, the school in question (which the Scottish press is unable to identify due to “legal reasons”) had supposedly warned parents that Fortnite was inspiring an increase in violence. The staff also expressed concerns to parents that Fortnite and “computer game culture” in general were related to an increase in “bad language” used among the students....

According to The Staten Island Advance, the child was on a Sunday afternoon shopping excursion when his foot became lodged in the escalator. Video taken by a shocked shopper on the ground shows the unidentified child visibly in distress as surrounding family and bystanders try to free him. A woman is also heard yelling for the escalator system to be shut down before the boy sustained further injury. It appears that, before the emergency stop button could be pushed, bystanders were trying to stop the escalators themselves, although the humming of the machinery is still heard in the background....

The FDA also shortened the time between the second dose of Pfizer and its booster shot from six months to five months. The updated regulations come as students return to school amid a surge in COVID-19 cases over the holidays. COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are especially high among children and adolescents. In the week ending January 1, hospitalizations for children increased 96% nationwide from the week prior, compared to about 46% for all age groups....

According to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred at approximately 7 p.m. at one of the fast-food chain’s locations in the 1600 block of U.S. Route 70. The two children, ages 2 and 11, were in the back seat of the car when a bullet broke through a window and hit them. The family immediately left the area to take the children, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, to a local hospital, police said....
