Russian personnel were met with a warm reception over the weekend as Chinese People’s Liberation Army Lieutenant General Liu Xiaowu, deputy commander of the Western Theater Command and commanding officer of Chinese forces in the upcoming exercise, presented a bouquet of flowers to members of the Russian military delegation visiting ahead of the Zapad-Interaction, or West-Interaction, drills set to play out from August 9 to 13. Liu “remarked that in the context of the big changes and pandemic, this is the first joint strategic exercise participated by Russian troops in China,” according to a readout published Monday by the Chinese Defense Ministry....

Philippine Foreign Minister Teddy Locsin Jr. said he had ordered his office to lodge a diplomatic protest against Beijing on Wednesday following the EEZ intrusions, which were reported by the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS). The WPS is a designation Manila uses for the eastern part of the South China Sea, where the country has exclusive fishing rights. Task force patrols on Sunday revealed 240 Chinese maritime militia vessels—part of an armed fishing fleet whose existence is disputed by Beijing—around the South China Sea islands....

Both the Office of Academic Affairs and Office of Research and Development pages for National Taiwan University were impacted. The landing pages of each were vandalized with a message that read, “There is only one China in the world,” according to reports by Taiwan News and the government controlled Central News Agency. Both websites were temporarily shuttered and remained out of service Monday morning as administrative officials worked to address the security issues....

Dubbed China’s “bat woman,” Shi also said she does not believe SARS-CoV-2—the virus that causes COVID-19—moved from bats to humans in the Hubei Province or the city of Wuhan, where the first cases were identified at the end of last year. Shi has been at the center of the COVID-19 pandemic after the Wuhan lab became the first to identify a “pneumonia with unknown etiology,” which later turned out to be COVID-19....

Multiple nations and world leaders have called on China to allow an independent international investigation into the origins and course of the COVID-19 virus. The dominant theory is that the novel coronavirus originated at a wildlife market in Wuhan....

The National Health Commission said in a release published Sunday that no new cases had been reported in Wuhan, and added that the number of suspected infections was at zero. A spokesperson for the Chinese government department also said the number of new patients in Wuhan stood at zero as of April 26. The city in China’s central Hubei province is believed to be the epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak, having first reported cases of unexplained pneumonia to the World Health Organization on December 31 last year....

Fakhrizadeh was assassinated near the Iranian capital of Tehran on Friday, according to the country’s defense ministry. Western intelligence agencies believe he was a leading figure in Iran’s nuclear weapon drive. Global Times, a Chinese state-run daily tabloid that is seen as part of the PRC’s broader propaganda efforts, published a brief editorial on Saturday asking if Fakhrizadeh’s killing had opened a “Pandora’s box”. “Western countries have remained silent about this barbaric and shameless act,” wrote Global Times editor-in-chief Hu Xijin....

Hua Chunying, China’s assistant minister of foreign affairs, on Wednesday scoffed at U.S. officials in a tweet. Her taunt followed part of a back-and-forth between the two countries as China seeks to balance its alliance with Russia with blowback from its roundly condemned invasion of Ukraine. “While top #US arms manufacturers boasted of the conflicts in #Ukraine as a boon for business, American people are suffering from soaring prices and higher inflation,” Hua, who serves as the ministry’s spokesperson, said in a Tweet....

“Doomed is your plot to undermine China’s sovereignty and security by exploiting the troublemakers in Hong Kong as pawns and the city as a frontier for secession, subversion, infiltration and sabotage activities against China,” a statement from the ministry’s commissioner’s office in Hong Kong reads. The wrangling stems from a draft proposal submitted this week in the National People’s Congress, a de facto organ of the ruling Communist Party, that is expected to target alleged treason, secession, sedition and subversion in Hong Kong....

China’s short track speed skater Fan Kexin, 28, failed to advance from the women’s 500m quarterfinals at Beijing 2022 on Monday. She might have taken Canada’s Alyson Charles, 23, out of the event as well, were it not for a retroactive review. Fan had won her first Olympic gold two days earlier. Deputy chef de mission of the Chinese delegation Xiao Tian, just hours off his flight from Beijing, said he already felt at home, reports Xinhua. “The food in the dining hall is fantastic. They have a section of Asian food with good flavour. The rooms we stay in look pretty nice,” he said after the national flag hoisting ceremony in the coastal athletes village. Xiao was especially impressed by the proximity between the village and competition venues....

According to his Twitter account, Jones cleaned out his fireplace and dumped the ashes outside Wednesday. Next thing he knew, his neighbors were knocking on his door telling him they had called the fire department. Jones' girlfriend, Taylor Higgins, posted pictures of the fire on Twitter. It looks like it got out of hand pretty quickly. Jones might need a stern talking-to from Smokey Bear.

Over 1000 Indian fans occupied a small part of the Qatar Sports Club Stadium as they supported Chopra as he began his Diamond League campaign in Doha. After winning gold at this year’s Commonwealth Games Chopra has been flooded with a pile of expectations and is looking forward to live up to them. “The Indian Sports Centre, a sports organization functioning under the agesis of the Indian Embassy in Qatar were at the stadium to cheer for the Indian athlete,” said Nilangshu Dey, President of Indian Sports Centre, Qatar....

Cairns expressed disappointment over the New Zealand Cricket Board for shunning him and the other accused and called for his accusers to provide proof to back up their allegations. Cairns along with former New Zealand players Daryl Tuffey and Lou Vincent have been named in an International Cricket Council (ICC) match-fixing probe. Cairns said no one had approached him although it has now been 10 weeks since the allegations were first made....

Appearing on ABC News on Wednesday night, the Republican touted his party’s gains in the House of Representatives and strong hopes of holding onto its Senate majority as evidence that American voters had not rejected GOP policies. He also stressed the importance of Republican wins in down-ballot state legislature races as electoral redistricting efforts loomed ahead. A CNN spokesperson wrote in a statement, “The New York Attorney General’s office released transcripts and exhibits Monday that shed new light on Chris Cuomo’s involvement in his brother’s defense.
