Sony’s Garfield film, which will be animated and produced by DNEG Animation alongside Alcon Entertainment, was first announced back in November 2021. Though Pratt was announced as the voice of Garfield from the get-go, the list of supporting cast members has been unveiled slowly over the course of the past year.

While Rhames, Hoult, Waddingham, and Strong have been announced as the newest cast members of the animated Garfield movie, details on which characters they will play were not divulged. The newest members of the Garfield cast join Samuel L. Jackson, who will voice a character named Vic, a new addition for the film who also happens to be the titular feline’s father. Sony’s new Garfield film will, of course, be based on Jim Davis’ classic comic book strip, which followed the eponymous lasagna-loving Cat’s life with owner Jon Arbuckle and his canine companion Odie, though who will voice these two characters has yet to be announced.

This is far from the first time Garfield has made the leap from the comic strip to the screen. There have been at least 3 Garfield television shows over the past two-plus decades, with the most famous arguably being 1994’s Garfield and Friends. That particular series spawned several primetime specials, including A Garfield Christmas Special, which is regarded by many as an underappreciated holiday classic. Of course, there are also the two infamous live-action/CG Garfield films in which Bill Murray voiced the feisty feline, though Murray has since claimed he only agreed to star in them because he mistakenly thought writer Joel Cohen was one of two Cohen brothers.

Much like the response to Pratt voicing Mario in the upcoming Nintendo film, not everyone believed Pratt was the ideal choice to voice Garfield. Pratt has big shoes to fill since Lorenzo Music, who voiced Garfield in the aforementioned TV programs until his death in 2001, is still widely associated with the character because his voice performance perfectly matched the surly feline’s personality. Still, the popularity of the comic strip and TV shows has earned Garfield generations of fans who may be willing to give Sony’s adaptation of the character a fair shot.

Garfield is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 16, 2024.
