Thor: Love and Thunder will be the second Thor film to be directed by Taika Waititi. He first directed Thor: Ragnarok back in 2017. The film is credited with revitalizing the God of Thunder’s franchise through the use of eccentric comedy and the introduction of new characters including Valkyrie (Thompson), the Grandmaster (Goldblum), and Korg (Waititi). With Waititi also serving as a writer on Love and Thunder, this path for the Thor franchise will continue.

Hemsworth shared a photo of himself and Portman on the set of Thor: Love and Thunder, who both sport their traditional costumes. Notably, Portman has traded Jane Foster’s mortal wear for an outfit suited for the Mighty Thor herself. Hemsworth’s accompanied the photo with a caption that revitalized Thor and Tony Stark’s age-old argument of who the best couple in the MCU is. Hemsworth also mentions the Met Gala, which took place on May 2 under the theme of Gilded Age fashion. His caption read, “Hey all, when’s the Met Gala? Asgard’s power couple just found the winning look,” before reminding fans of Love and Thunder’s release in July.
The argument of Marvel’s power couple has come up amongst its fans time and time again and wormed its way into Marvel Studios’ films. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Maria Hill and James Rhodes asked Tony and Thor about Pepper and Jane’s whereabouts. Tony and Thor’s answers become a competition between the men to prove which of the women is the most successful. After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Tony and Pepper’s story lives on through their daughter Morgan, while Jane and Thor’s story will have a new development in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Love and Thunder will feature the returns of several familiar characters. Aside from Hemsworth’s return as Thor, Valkyrie, Sif (Alexander), the Grandmaster, and Jane Foster are set to appear in the film. They will be joined by Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) from Guardians of the Galaxy, who made Thor’s acquaintance in Avengers: Infinity War. Thor: Love and Thunder will also feature a few first-time appearances, including Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) and Zeus (Russell Crowe).
The disposition of Gorr the God Butcher has the chance to make him the scariest villain Thor has had to face in his own franchise. With Odin dead and Asgard no longer existing in its original form, the fundamentals of Love and Thunder are already far different than any of Thor’s other films. How Thor will respond to Jane Foster’s new look and respond to the massive threat of Gorr will only be answered once Love and Thunder hits theaters.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set for theatrical release on July 8, 2022.
